Where to Stay Near Troy and Ezine: Choosing Your Base in the Troad

Troy, Gallipoli, Bozcaada or Assos: where you stay shapes your whole trip. We compare Çanakkale, the Ezine area, the Geyikli coast, Bozcaada and Assos to help you choose the best base for your plans.

Troy, Gallipoli, Bozcaada, Assos: this corner of Turkey is packed with places to see, but they are not all in one spot. Where you choose to stay will shape your whole trip, from how long you spend in the car to how easily you catch a ferry. In this guide, we compare the main places to stay in the region so you can choose the base that best fits your plans.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Book

  • What do you want to see? Only the Gallipoli battlefields, only Troy, or several sites from Troy down to Assos?
  • How will you get around? Will you have a car, or will you depend on buses, tours and ferry timetables?
  • When are you travelling? Coastal areas and the islands get busy in summer, while ferry sailings are less frequent in winter.

The Main Places to Stay

Çanakkale City

The city is the natural base for the Gallipoli battlefields, which lie across the Dardanelles and are reached by ferry, as well as for the museums in the city centre. Troy is within easy reach, but the sites further south, such as Alexandria Troas, the Bozcaada ferry port and Assos, are a longer drive away.

The Ezine Area and the Çanakkale–İzmir Highway

Most of the region's sights are spread on either side of the Çanakkale–İzmir highway, which makes the Ezine area a practical central base. From here you can head north to Troy and Çanakkale or south towards Ayvacık and Assos on different days without changing hotels. Ezine town itself is inland, with no seafront.

Geyikli and the Dalyan Coast

A good choice if you want to mix beach time with sightseeing. Geyikli is home to Yükyeri port, where the ferries to Bozcaada depart, and Dalyan sits next to Alexandria Troas and the Pink Lake. These coastal villages are at their liveliest in summer.

Bozcaada

Staying on the island is a lovely way to enjoy its atmosphere. However, every trip to the ancient sites on the mainland depends on ferry times, so many visitors find it more flexible to stay on the mainland and visit the island for the day. You can find all the ferry details in our Bozcaada ferry guide.

Assos and Ayvacık

Ideal if your focus is Assos, the Temple of Apollo Smintheus and the southern slopes of Mount Ida. Troy and the ancient sites along the Ezine coast, however, are a considerably longer drive from here.

Where to Stay, Based on Your Plans

  • Gallipoli battlefields only: Çanakkale city is the most practical choice.
  • Troy and Gallipoli: Çanakkale city or the Ezine area both work; from Ezine you are close to Troy and can reach Çanakkale for the ferry to the peninsula.
  • Troy, Alexandria Troas, the Pink Lake and a day on Bozcaada: A base in the Ezine area, close to the Çanakkale–İzmir highway, keeps driving times short.
  • A beach holiday on the island: Stay on Bozcaada.
  • Assos and Mount Ida only: The Ayvacık side is the better fit.
  • The whole region in a few days: Choose one central base and head in a different direction each day rather than moving hotels every night.

Why Stay on the Çanakkale–İzmir Highway?

Our hotel in Bozeli village, Ezine, sits right on the highway that connects most of the region's sights. From here, Geyikli Yükyeri port is about 15 km (9 miles) away, Troy about 20 km (12 miles) and Alexandria Troas and the Pink Lake about 25 km (15 miles).

Çanakkale city centre is about 45 km (28 miles) away, Çanakkale Airport about 50 km and Assos about 60 km (37 miles). That means you can reach Troy and the Gallipoli ferries to the north and the Ayvacık coast to the south from the same base.

Staying Near Troy: Questions We Often Hear

Should I stay in Çanakkale city or near Troy?

If your trip is mainly about the Gallipoli battlefields, Çanakkale city is the most convenient. If you also want to see Troy, Alexandria Troas, Bozcaada and Assos, a central base in the Ezine area on the Çanakkale–İzmir highway saves a lot of driving.

Is it better to stay on Bozcaada or on the mainland?

For an island holiday, Bozcaada is a lovely choice. If you also plan to visit the ancient sites on the mainland, staying on the mainland and visiting the island for the day means you depend less on ferry times.

Is breakfast included at Yükseloğulları Otel?

Yes. A village-style breakfast is included for all our guests, with our own Ezine cheese, butter, honey, olives and olive oil on the table.

Is there parking at the hotel?

Yes. We offer free parking, a coach and caravan area and an electric vehicle charging station. Directions are on our Location & Getting Here page.
