Tenedos island, known today as Bozcaada, lies off Türkiye's northern Aegean coast. Arriving by ferry, you see the castle first, with the harbour and town tucked beside it. Beyond the streets are vineyards, sandy beaches and small coves. The most useful starting point for a visit is deciding how you want to spend your day: exploring the town, swimming or combining the two. Here we bring together the island's main sights and a day trip you can plan from Ezine.
Where Is Bozcaada, and What Can You See on Foot?
Bozcaada belongs to Çanakkale province and sits opposite the mainland coast at Geyikli. Tenedos is its ancient name; Bozcaada is the name to look for on ferry information and local signs. The ferry arrives beside the town, so you can start sightseeing without a transfer.
The castle, shopping streets and historic neighbourhoods fit into one walk. Beaches and the western sunset viewpoints require a separate journey. For a first visit, we suggest choosing the town and one beach, leaving room for lunch and an unhurried return to the harbour. A longer stay gives you time for different coves and the vineyard landscape.
Bozcaada Castle and the Old Town
Start at the Harbour Castle
Bozcaada Castle stands next to the ferry landing and dominates the waterfront. Its original builder and construction date are uncertain. It was repaired under Sultan Mehmed II and extensively rebuilt in 1815, during the reign of Mahmud II.
The setting helps explain the castle's importance: it watches over the approach from the sea and the harbour beside it. Allow roughly 45–60 minutes as a starting point for your visit, adjusting for your interest in the building and photography. Check current admission arrangements and opening hours before travelling rather than relying on prices quoted in older guides.
Explore the Historic Streets and Harbour
From the castle, continue into the shopping streets and the old Greek quarter. Stone houses, timber shutters and small shops make this a rewarding area to explore without a rigid route. Turn into a few side streets, then work your way back towards the waterfront.
The bell tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary is a landmark to look out for. Seeing the church from the street does not necessarily mean you can visit its interior that day. If local history interests you, consider adding Bozcaada Museum, checking its visiting arrangements beforehand, particularly outside the main season.
These streets are also residential. Leave doorways clear when taking photographs and give people space around their homes. Comfortable shoes are useful on the stone paving. You can finish the walk with a coffee by the harbour before deciding whether to have lunch in town or head towards the coast.
Bozcaada Beaches: Choosing Your Swimming Stop
Choose a beach for its access and facilities as well as its appearance. The sea around Bozcaada can feel cool, and wind conditions affect how pleasant a particular shore is on the day. Think about shade, drinking water and your return transport before leaving town.
Ayazma Beach
Ayazma is one of the island's best-known beaches, with a sandy shore and places to eat nearby. Seasonal sunbed and parasol services make it a practical option for visitors who want a beach stop with amenities close at hand.
It can be busy in summer. If swimming is your main reason for visiting, you could shorten the town walk and spend a longer part of the day here. Ask about current charges for any services you use; an old beach price list is not a reliable guide to your day's budget.
Sulubahçe Beach
Sulubahçe lies between Ayazma and Habbele. Approach it with fewer expectations of organised facilities and bring your own water, snacks and sun protection. It is an alternative for visitors happy to prepare for a simpler beach stop.
Fewer facilities do not guarantee an empty shore. For a day trip, choose between nearby beaches according to the conditions and your transport rather than trying to visit them all. Time spent changing location can quickly eat into the swimming time you came for.
Habbele Beach
Habbele continues along the coast beyond Sulubahçe and offers another option for a beach afternoon, with seasonal food and sunbed services. Check which businesses are operating if particular amenities matter to you, especially near the beginning or end of the season.
If you arrive by minibus, establish where to catch the return service and when it runs before settling down. This small piece of planning is more useful than choosing a beach solely because a photograph makes it look quiet.
Akvaryum Bay, Also Known as Mermer Burnu
Akvaryum is a smaller cove known for clear water and snorkelling when conditions allow. It suits a prepared swimming stop better than a day built around extensive beach facilities. Bring drinking water and consider how you will find shade.
Clear water alone does not tell you whether conditions are suitable for swimming. Assess the waves and entry point when you arrive, and take footwear appropriate for moving around the shore. The cove's small size also means it can feel crowded on busy days.
Food, Small Shops and Vineyard Visits
Allow enough time for lunch to be part of the visit. Fish, seafood and meze feature in the island's food culture, while a lighter meal may suit you better before swimming. When ordering fish, ask whether the price is for a portion or by weight so that the bill is clear from the outset.
Small shops sell island specialities such as tomato and fig preserves. Buying jars near the end of the day saves carrying them to the beach. Ask how any food purchases should be stored if they will travel with you for several hours.
Vineyards are another part of Bozcaada's identity. If you want to visit a producer, arrange it in advance and allow time beyond the town-and-beach route. Working vineyards are private land, and a scenic roadside view does not automatically indicate a visitor entrance.
Tenedos Island in One Day: A Practical Route
This suggested itinerary assumes a morning arrival and a return to the mainland the same day. Fit it around the ferry timetable for your travel date. The time allowances below are planning suggestions, not fixed departure times.
- Morning: castle and old town. Start beside the harbour, then explore the historic streets. Roughly two to three hours allows for sightseeing, photographs and a coffee stop.
- Lunch: town or coast. Choose where to eat before setting off for the beach. Include the journey in your schedule rather than counting only time spent at the table.
- Afternoon: one beach. Select Ayazma, Sulubahçe, Habbele or Akvaryum. Around two to three hours gives you a worthwhile swimming stop without constantly packing up and moving.
- Before departure: shopping and boarding. Return to town, collect any purchases and reach the harbour in line with the ferry operator's boarding requirements.
If swimming is not part of your plans, use the afternoon for the museum, a longer town walk or a producer visit arranged beforehand. This also gives you an alternative when beach conditions are unappealing. Adding several distant stops to a short visit can leave you spending more time travelling than exploring.
Should You Add Sunset at Polente?
The western coast around Polente Lighthouse and the wind turbines is known for sunset views. It needs a separate journey from town, with time for getting there, waiting for sunset and returning to the harbour.
Include it in a mainland day trip only if sunset and the return ferry fit comfortably together. Allow for the journey back and boarding, not just the time the sun disappears. If sunset is your main priority, an overnight stay on the island may suit your plans better.
Getting to Bozcaada and Around the Island
The main ferry connection runs from Geyikli Yükyeri Pier on the mainland. The crossing takes approximately 35 minutes, with waiting, boarding and weather conditions affecting the overall journey. Our Bozcaada ferry guide from Geyikli explains the mainland approach and the choices involved in travelling with a vehicle.
You do not need a car to explore the town. Seasonal minibuses serve beach routes, but confirm the destinations and return times for your day. Taking a car gives you more flexibility beyond the centre while adding vehicle boarding and parking to your planning. Choose your stops first, then decide which option suits them.
When to Visit and What to Bring
Summer is the main season for beach visits, with July and August often requiring more advance planning for transport and accommodation. Spring and autumn are also worth considering for town walks and vineyard scenery. Outside the main season, some businesses and transport options may operate less frequently.
Bring a light windproof layer, drinking water and sun protection. A breeze can make the day feel cooler without reducing sun exposure. Keeping an alternative town-based plan makes it easier to adapt the visit if the weather changes.
Staying in Ezine for a Bozcaada Day Trip
A mainland base can work well when Bozcaada is one part of a wider journey through the Troad, the historic region around Troy. You can devote one day to the island and separate days to Troy or Alexandria Troas. Our guide to Ezine and the Troad brings these routes together.
Yükseloğulları Hotel is in Bozeli village, Ezine, on the Çanakkale–İzmir highway. Geyikli Yükyeri Pier is approximately 15 km, or 9 miles, from our hotel. That is the road distance to the departure pier; allow separately for the ferry crossing. For help choosing a mainland base, see our guide to staying near Troy and Ezine.
Breakfast is included in your stay and service begins at 08:00. If you would like breakfast at our hotel before leaving, choose a ferry that gives you enough time. You can send us your dates to enquire about a stay while planning your island visit and mainland excursions.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bozcaada
Are Tenedos and Bozcaada the same island?
Yes. Tenedos is the island's ancient name, while Bozcaada is its modern Turkish name. Look for Bozcaada when checking ferry routes and local travel information.
Is one day enough for Bozcaada?
One day can cover the castle, old town and one beach. Allow longer if you want several coves, a vineyard visit and an evening around sunset without planning everything around the return ferry.
Which beach is best for a first visit?
Ayazma is a practical starting point if you value a sandy beach and nearby amenities. Sulubahçe, Habbele and Akvaryum offer different alternatives; your transport, facility needs and the day's sea conditions should guide the choice.
Can you visit Bozcaada with children?
A short town walk and one beach stop can make a manageable day. Plan for shade, meals and toilets, and choose a swimming spot after assessing conditions and the children's swimming ability.
Can you combine Bozcaada and Troy in one day?
Brief visits may be possible, but ferry and road journeys leave less time at both. We recommend separate days if you want to explore Troy and its museum as well as enjoy the island.
